Developers of the popular XBMC media center decided to rename the project in connection with a number of problems. This was reported on Sunday Linux.org citing a statement of the program developers.
The first problem is to combine multimedia tasks discrepancy title. Formally XBMC stands for XBox Media Center, but the objectives of the project have changed, and support for the Xbox long discontinued. In addition, XBMC already gone beyond the media center and now it is a platform for the creation of diverse entertainment.
The second problem is that in deciphering abbreviations XBMC featured word Xbox. Because of this project can not register a trademark, and therefore has no legal leverage to control the use of the name.
Renaming is done in preparation for the next release. Already released versions will continue to be available under the name of XBMC, but instead will be released XBMC 14 Kodi 14. Simultaneously will be renamed infrastructure elements, including site and mailing lists.
It is reported that the name Kodi necet not any specific meaning and selected solely because of the pleasant sound. How to use the trademark Kodi will be similar to the rules of the organization Mozilla Foundation, which prohibits the use of the name and logo for Firefox modified assemblies.
